“We’re writing to let you know that Google Cloud IoT Core Service will be discontinued on August 15 2023 at which point your access to the IoT Core Device Manager API will no longer be available.” – Google
A brief notice from Google, warning and giving users one year to find an alternative service.
A Google spokesperson said, “Since launching IoT Core, it has become clear that our customers’ needs could be better served by our network of partners that specialize in IoT applications and services.”
On the other hand, Microsoft is doing the opposite!
Microsoft is continuing to build up its stable of IoT services and more tightly integrate them with Azure.
CEO Satya Nadella‘s “intelligent cloud/intelligent edge” pitch is morphing into more of an intelligent end-to-end distributed-computing play.
So, what does this news on Google shuttering its IoT core services and Microsoft doing the opposite tell us about competition?
As Google’s main competitor, how does Microsoft benefit from this?
Competition is an inevitable part of the business world; it is an important part of the business ecosystem. In fact, competition can be an effective tool for growing and improving your business.
People become more innovative just to stay ahead of the competition. They quickly learn to generate new ideas and effectively test them in a relatively short period of time.
Competition shortens the time it takes for ideas to be generated and implemented. This is due to the constant need to stay ahead of others, which forces people to act quickly.
This event will help organizations/businesses think outside the box and look for solutions. Any company’s success depends on its ability to innovate.
For those organizations reliant upon Google IoT Core, they have a year to find a new solution. Or maybe try Google’s competitors like Microsoft Corp. as it offers a competing service called IoT Hub as part of its Azure cloud platform.
Microsoft is working to incorporate edge computing and IoT teams and integrate these offerings more seamlessly with Azure. Azure IoT and PM architecture teams are moving to the Azure Edge + Platform suite.
Competition is beneficial to businesses because it forces them to be resourceful, nibble, and demonstrate the value of each customer to their company.
Businesses that master these characteristics, combined with efficient operational standards, will have an advantage over their competitors in highly competitive industries.
Those who can respond quickly to changes, use technologies and tracked data to innovate quickly, drive loyal customers, and optimize price points through efficient operations will be able to stay ahead of the competition.
Many users seem extremely frustrated at Google’s decision to shut down its IoT Core business. This decision might affect their performance in the future.
And while Google shuts down its IoT core services, Microsoft aims to create cloud software and services that are as sophisticated as if they were a single fabric of persistence. They are also looking to provide cross-service and device security for IoT offerings., and many more. These plans and integrations will directly impact its users.
It will benefit the customer.
Brands and business owners should be creative and devise out-of-the-box strategies to capture their customers’ attention. They will work to understand the finer details of their target customers – their pain points and purchase triggers – in order to discover some new untapped customer needs.
With so many value-based offerings, brands and businesses should work tirelessly to improve their products.
Looking at these reasons, competition is definitely essential for businesses to thrive.
